Blogging and RSS Feeds

August 13th, 2005 · No Comments

Blogging and RSSFor whatever reason this concept seems very hard for most of us to get a handle on. Here is the basic concept so you can get your hands around this idea.

An RSS feed and a Blog go hand in hand. You first create a blog of articles (posts) that presumably is ongoing with new articles/posts occuring regularly. Ideally, you are posting useful articles to the blog that sometimes refer to items you sell with links in the text back to your web pages. You can allow others to post to your blog or comment on your articles depending upon how you set it up. This can create more new content and interest.

The RSS feed is a URL created by the blog software (script) that allows anyone with an RSS reader to read this URL (and receive update notices) of your blog articles on thier desktop. The bigger advantage of an RSS feed is that webmasters can use software to post your RSS feed (in essence YOUR blog) on their website for content in a way that blends into their web pages. You receive the exposure and links to your website and the other webmaster receives some ongoing fresh content for his website.

And, the search engines are presumed to give your blog pages good ranking because the content is regularly being updated and changing (fresh content). This makes them visit more often. And, you can do what is called “pinging” - this tells others that your Blog has new content and to update their cache of your blog.

Do a search for WordPress which is an excellent free Blog software. And for CaRP which is a free way for webmasters to integrate RSS content into their website. Also, search and read about RSS readers. Read the websites about these products and the whole process will eventually sink in.
