Google Base Aiming at eBay
Google confirmed today that it is getting closer to opening it’s Google Base to the public. Google Base is a database that will allow users to post information for Internet distribution. It is widely expected that the database will allow ads that will match buyers and sellers in much the same way that eBay’s auction model works. eBay’s stock is down slightly today after the announcement.
In June Google acquired the domain googlebase.com in anticipation of it’s Google Base introduction and speculation has been flying around many forums about the possible structure and release date of the new service. The domain is not active as of today but expect Google to go live with a free service in beta mode soon. Most analysts expect the service to go live as soon as today at the base.google.com subdomain.
Google watchers anticipate the new service will become a meeting-point where users share information, services and goods. Google is also expected to soon introduce a new micropayment service called Google Purchases to compliment the Google Base release.
