Cuba to lift ban on buying real estate
Selling or buying property in Cuba is illegal. But a new law will allow Cubans for the first time in more than 50 years to allow the sale and purchase of real estate. Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports from Havana

Obama's brother at :30 sec
@Hillsillverr What do taxes have to do with ownership?
@LazarusCato I doubt they'd let some foreigner start buying up property like that.. Also, there are ways to curb stuff like that, so it's not likely to happen anytime soon, and it can be dealt with in the future without massive bans now.
Evict GITMO!
@pvtjamesryan3 I guess big mac's, bently's & Benjamin's mean more to some people then others.
@pvtjamesryan3 yeah except they've got free & universal healthcare & education (thru university), more doctors per capita then any other country, 95% of the food they grow is organic, they've been thru peak oil, they offer medical scholarships to the 3rd world, they have virtually the same life expectancy as americans, & have a lower infant mortality rate then the US etc etc - all this from Nickel & Cigar exports & a crippling embargo from a superpower - I'd say Cuba is doing ok.
@eternallord sarcasm? people buy up entire blocks all the time, might not be possible for Cubans just yet, but I could think of some wealthy foreigners to the north who might like to take advantage of this.
@kaleo183rd free market fundamentalism is bad, but cuban laws are also bad... Why would you regulate how many homes some one can buy? It isn't like some one is going to come along and buy up an entire city block!
I don't see how letting people sell their homes to acquire funds for a new one was "anti-communism" in the first place, especially when you'd let them trade it away.. The entire point of currency is to make trading easier.. There are many ways to regulate real estate trade so it doesn't get out of hand without banning it entirely.
ideological purity is dumb.
slowly but surely communism will give way--look at "communist' china, only after abandoning many maoist practices are they an economical force in the world. now look at cuba, the people will improve their homes because they now own it and they can make it their own. plus, it will be worth more if they took care of their homes, improving it, as much as you can.
@Hillsillverr OK, I get what your saying but two things you pay propety tax in britain( council tax) for services like garbage collecting and street cleaning and many other services and number two I rather own my own property and pay tax on it then have someone come one day and kick me out of my house.
As a republican housing is the one thing that I think should be nationalized
I smell a housing bubble!
@jatigre1 Trust me, millions won't.
So can I buy land there or is it reserved to citizens?
They may as well. Unless China or Venezuela are willing to pump some investment in the country, there's little point letting people live in unsatisfactory conditions. I wouldn't call for a return to capitalism, but I'd say they need more direct democracy and a rethink on how the economy should be run in the 21st century.
@WAV777 Buy the ticket, take the ride
@deceiver123m yep ill b right behind ya
Can you imagine millions of people going outside to march in favor of maintaining this dilapidated and backward standard of living. Its their own Country and their own government.
@HDaviator Historic communism is different from the Communist system.
I cube ur not allowed to sell property because u r not allowed to own land. In america you have to pay property tax on the land you own, so tachnically you dont own land there either!
Freedom my ass!
