The Grabapple Guide is absolutely the best I could do. I've put my heart and soul into it, and done my best to make it informative and fun to read. I've tried to include all the little tidbits I've picked up in over 15 years of running e-commerce sites, and condense it all down into this guide.

So What?

Okay - So it's a gorgeous book, and when you're done, you can build your own e-commerce site for free. You get detailed how-to and special techniques for everything from finding products to sell to handling customers. But why would you do this instead of just being an affiliate or using AdSense?

Reason #1: Money

You will always get a bigger piece of the pie when you are selling products directly. And the product price doesn't have an upper limit. You may be thrilled to get a 15.00 AdSense click, and rightly so...But I make more than that on almost everything I sell. I routinely make hundreds of dollars at a pop. I am writing this the day after Thanksgiving, and my last three orders from my main site yesterday:

  • 2 items, total 170.00 plus shipping, my cut is $38.00
  • 1 item, total 2600.00 plus shipping, my cut is $650.00
  • 2 items, total 129.94 plus shipping, my cut is $72.94

This is just one site, and I have much larger days than this. Let's take a look at a longer time frame - this right out my book:

$ per page view indeed. Not per click - I average over a dollar for every three page views - and that's just the sales that came in through the shopping cart. Many people run their e-commerce sites that way, and that's fine. But I want more. We take orders via email, fax and by phone which drive those numbers up to $0.93 per page view. Not per click, or per visitor - page view!

These are not unusual numbers. That's not a ton of traffic - I bet some of you reading this have sites that pull more - but are you pulling this kind of cash out of your traffic?

Reason #2: Google

Not all your traffic will come from Google - In fact if you're smart, you'll make sure that your traffic sources are as diversified as you can make them. But for the time being, most of us will rely on Google and Bing for the lion's share of our new visitors.

What does Google hate? Affiliate sites.

I know - You know Joe Someone that is making a killing with them. I have some myself. But Google has its own ideas.

They see affiliates as an unnecessary step between the searcher and what he wants to find or buy. Unneeded middlemen. Sometimes this is true - sometimes it's not. I've hit upon some really nice affiliate sites that gave me info I couldn't get anywhere else, and I was happy to see them. But I'm not Google.

If your site gets a manual review, and every picture and link leads somewhere else, it's pretty obvious what you are. Will you get flagged, or get a -100 penalty, or even be de-indexed? Who knows? Did the reviewers' wife yell at him over breakfast?

Do you really want to put your time and money into building a site, only to have someone you don't know, working for someone else who you can't call, trash all your efforts? Me neither.

I don't care about manual reviews, algorithm changes or Panda. Every time the Panda gets hungry, he eats one of my competitors, and I move up a notch for some keywords. Why? Because my sites are real. I sell product. I have product info, manuals, comparisons and more. And when someone clicks on a "buy now" button they don't go to Amazon - I take their money.

Now, having said the above, are their affiliate sites that are doing OK? Sure. Are there e-commerce sites that got bit by the Panda? Sure. But I know what the odds are, and I know which kind of site I want to have. I'll show you how to put together an e-commerce site full of original content that both your visitors and the search engines will reward.

Affiliate Marketers Read This

Maybe I haven't convinced you, and you would just rather have affiliate sites - you can still put Grabapple to good use:

I know for a fact that this is so, even for a small company like my own - I've been doing it for 15 years already! Get on board and start making money with your own business - learn from an expert!

The ?About the Author? section at the start sign posts that Daveh is proud of what he has accomplished and also that he knows his stuff?

[Edit: One other thing I forgot to mention is that Daveh takes great care to show us how to set up an e-commerce site using only FREE resources, e.g. themes and plugins. I thought this was pretty neat!]

The amazing thing was that this Ecommerce guide is just as polished as The 4HWW book. Seriously, it is.
